Homemade Instant Oatmeal

Ahh, instant oatmeal packets. I love the convenience, but I’m not fond of the amount of sugar and junk in the mainstream brands, and the stunning lack of actual oats. To make matters worse, the organic brands always seem bland to me. With this mix, you can add as much or as little of the mix as you like to control sugar and please your tastes, and then add oats to your heart’s content.

1 cup nonfat dry milk powder
1/2 cup confectioner’s sugar
2/3 cup brown sugar
2 tsp salt
1 tsp ground cinnamon
1/2 tsp ground ginger
pinch of ground cloves

Combine all ingredients in a bowl, stirring to mix thoroughly. Store in an airtight container in your pantry.

When ready to make oatmeal, add 2 TBSP of mix (or more or less based on your preference)  to 2/3 cup of quick oats. I usually add a cup or so of water, then microwave for 1 minute.

Add chopped apple, berries, whatever… and enjoy! SO much yummier than instant packets from the store! Hubby loves this with a little extra brown sugar and raspberries on top.

  1. Good idea! I also dislike instant oatmeal and buy quick oats in bulk but my kids still complain they take too much time in the morning. I will be trying this recipe.

    1. I was pleasantly surprised by how yummy (and fast) this was. We have been eating our oatmeal with this mix for over a year now! Great to bring camping, too.

    1. It’s great! You can add spices to the mix to suit your tastes – you could even make some single serve baggies and add dehydrated fruit.
