Remember the squash that were suffering from blossom end rot in the Grow Camp? Well, I ended up pulling out the squash a few weeks ago. It pained me to do it, but it had to be done. They were taking up way to much space to just sit and rot on the vine.
Here they are after I pulled them out of the enclosure. A sad sight to be sure, but it did provide some much needed breathing room for my peppers.
I could almost hear my pepper plants thanking me for the much needed sunlight.
The squash at the bottom of the basket were all I was able to salvage from all those plants. Hubberman was able to make a delicious side dish from them, though. He stir-fried them with the eggplant from this picture in a light sauce of sesame oil and soy sauce.
Better luck with squash next time, I suppose! Adding that to the “lessons learned.”
So sad, so sad. I had two cucumber plants that ended up not being cucumbers at all! They grew some kind of cross-pollenated bulbous shaped things that looked like melons. I finally pulled up those plants, but it wasn’t sad for me at all!
LOL, Robin Jean Marie, sounds like you may have invented a new vegetable/fruit!!
I know the feeling… I need to do the same with a few of my tomato plants. *Sob*
😦 Sorry!! Even when they are not doing well, it’s sad to see them go.
Squash Bummer – but the eggplant looks tasty!
Thanks – yes, it was!
I feel your pain… I don’t even like to thin out seedlings!!
I know! I’m the same way.
Bumert. Eventhough I don’t garden with vegetables I still feel your pain, It has happened in the past eith plants.
Cynthia
Yes, it’s never fun – veggie, flower or otherwise. Better luck next year, I guess!
oh no! I hate ripping out things!! But I had to do with my broccoli which was SOOO aphid infested it was not worth trying to save….better luck next time!
Those aphids!! Grrr. Sorry the buggies got to your broccoli. There’s always next year!
The sun comes up and the sun goes down – and the hands on the clock turn round and round – yes, the cycle of life continues, even in the lives of squash plants. Mine were big and beautiful, but now with the heat and dryness, they’re nothing but shriveled vines. But, Lord willin’, there will be a next year to try again.
Amen to that!
Every year there are winners and losers. My squash and pumpkins are not doing well either. Tomatoes are the big winners this year. They must love the heat.
Yes, I got a lot happier about gardening when I accepted the failures as an inevitable part of the process! Glad your tomatoes are doing well!!
